“Gathering Storm is unique and layered with subtle complexities, rich in atmospheric character and first of the new Rum Runner Chronicles. Try it!”
“Florida…land of Eternal Youth…sun-kissed ocean playground. Paradise that floats in brackish water… ravaged by hurricanes… floods so deep they’ll drown your soul, blast furnace heat sucks out the relentless drive… lethargy dulls… energy. The steamy part of America. Paradise, all right.”
In Gathering Storm, Edith moves from Philadelphia to Miami after the death of her bootlegging husband. It’s evident she is not like other women. Edith has moxie and fortitude needed to survive here. The heavy, miserable atmosphere equates to Edith’s life. She lost her husband nefariously, relocated to an uninviting place and must build a new life. Edith meets with her friend and mentor, Mae Capone, wife of Al Capone. In a little town outside of Miami, Edith buys a speakeasy. The mobster lifestyle is in her blood. Edith’s business is rum running, and business is good. The locals want her gone by any means necessary. A self-righteous preacher rallies against Edith. Smugglers notice Edith is skilled and savvy, and despise her.
Edith is fighting uphill, a sisyphean task, with no one-except Mae Capone. Edith’s intelligence and worldliness gain her allies and form bonds. Can Edith win, or is this her end?
Edith is a remarkable woman going against the laws of nature to carve herself a place in this world. Despite illegalities, Edith is an admirable, inspiring, determined woman in a man’s world.
